Frank Deno – My Story
“It isn’t normal to know what we want. It is a rare and difficult psychological achievement.”
~ Abraham Maslow
The Winding Path
If you were to look at my career on paper, you might scratch your head and wonder how all the pieces fit together. My journey wasn’t a strategic climb up a single ladder; it was more like exploring a vast mountain range. It took me a long time to figure out what I wanted.
It started with the tangible world of construction, literally building things from the ground up. From there, I moved into the discipline of the U.S. Army and structure and logic of math and computer science in college. After college my path led into the digital world, where I was building things you couldn’t see—software, IT infrastructure, digital solutions of all kinds.
I found myself fascinated by the massive, complex systems that run our world, which led me to leadership roles in sectors I never expected: government banking, electrical power markets, non-profit, and healthcare. Along the way, I caught the entrepreneurial bug and started several of my own companies, the equivalent of business ‘sky diving’—leaping into a new venture, confident I could build the parachute on the way down.
After three decades of this zigzag, I had a realization. I noticed that whether I was talking to a software engineer, a construction foreman, a non-profit director, or a CEO, the fundamental challenges were always the same: leadership, strategy, and navigating change.
My winding path, combined with a deep dive into the academic side of business and leadership, gave me a unique ability to speak all of those different ‘languages.’ That’s why I co-founded Blue Jean Business—to use that broad perspective to help leaders like you connect the dots in your own organizations.
And when I’m not coaching or consulting, I’m still exploring. You’ll find me outdoors with my family and friends—whether that’s biking, skiing, sky diving or guiding a scuba or white water rafting trip. Because what I’ve learned, both in business and in life, is that the best adventures are the ones we navigate together.
“Frank is a leadership development expert, who understands how people grow and how to create environments which support rapid development.”
He’s also a great coach and introduced me to the concepts of coaching many years ago. He understands the power of team and the value of each person, both tremendous assets for any endeavor.
